BEATRIX GATES' four poetry collections include Ten Minutes, In the Open, a Lambda Poetry Award finalist, and letterpress editions of native tongue and Shooting at Night. Beatrix Gates and Electa Arenal translated contemporary Spanish poet Jesus Aguado's The Poems of Vikram Babu, written in the voice of a 17th c. Indian mystic, and published by Host Publications in a bilingual edition in 2009. Gates and Arenal received a Witter Bynner Translation Award and SFAI residency; and Gates, Arenal and Aguado presented a bilingual program on translation and Aguado's poetry at Poets House in NYC in 2010. Their translations have appeared in Sirena: Poesia, arte and culture; Tarpaulin Sky; The Dirty Goat and Sam Hamill's POETRY AGAINST THE WAR. Gates' bilingual collection, Nada que ocultar/Nothing to Hide, translated by Yolanda Morato, will be published by puerta del mar in Malaga, Spain. In another collaboration, Gates conceived and wrote the libretto for the chamber opera, “The Singing Bridge,”with music by composer Anna Dembska. "The Singing Bridge" premiered at Maine’s Stonington Opera House in 2005 with support from the NEA. Gates edited The Wild Good: Lesbian Writings & Photographs on Love (Anchor), and Gates' poems have been published widely and have appeared in Ploughshares, Quay, Sinister Wisdom, The Dirty Goat, The Kenyon Review and in the anthologies THE WORLD IN US: Lesbian & Gay Poetry of the Next Wave and Lesbian & Gay Poetry In Our Time. She has been a poetry fellow at the MacDowell Colony, Millay Colony and VCCA. She founded Granite Press (1975-1989) in Penobscot, Maine where she ran a letterpress printshop, designed and printed broadsides and limited editions of poetry, and later published poetry paperback for the trade by Joan Larkin, Grace Paley and the groundbreaking bilingual anthology, IXOK AMAR.GO, Central American Women Poets for Peace. She has taught literature and writing at Colby and Hampshire Colleges, NYU, BMCC and CCNY at CUNY. She is a member of the Goddard MFA faculty, and she works as an editor. She lives in Brooksville, Maine.
